Following a narrow victory in the 1924 prohibition plebiscite to retain temperance laws, the Conservative government of George Howard Ferguson campaigned in 1926 on easing restrictions and introduced the Liquor Control Act as a compromise between complete prohibition and unregulated alcohol sales.
